The diamond

An overview

The trillion - also known as the trilliant - is a triangular diamond cut that commands immediate attention with its bold, three-sided geometry. Its broad, flat profile delivers one of the largest face-up appearances per carat of any diamond shape, making it a smart choice for those who want maximum visual impact. Whether set as a daring centre stone or as matched accent pairs, the trillion brings energy and dynamism to any design.

Heritage

Origin & development

The trillion cut was developed in Amsterdam in the late 1970s by the Asscher diamond family, the same house responsible for the famous Asscher cut. It was created as a way to maximise yield from triangular rough diamond crystals, which occur naturally as macles - flat, triangular diamond formations. By developing a faceting pattern optimised for this crystal shape, cutters could produce beautiful finished stones from material that would otherwise result in significant waste.

The cut

How it's shaped

The trillion features three sides that may be straight, slightly curved, or a combination of both, depending on the cutting style. Straight-sided trillions have a more geometric, modern look, while curved-sided versions appear softer and more organic. The facet pattern is a modified brilliant arrangement adapted to the triangular form, typically featuring 31 or 50 facets. The three pointed corners are usually trimmed slightly to reduce the risk of chipping when set.

Why this cut

Highlights

Trillion diamonds punch well above their carat weight in terms of visual presence. The triangular profile spreads weight across a broad, shallow form, creating a stone that appears significantly larger than a round of equal weight. As a centre stone, the trillion makes a confident, unconventional statement. As matched accent pairs flanking a round or oval centre, trillions add geometric contrast and visual energy that elevates the entire design.
