An overview
The trapezoid diamond is a four-sided step-cut stone with one pair of parallel sides and one pair of angled sides, creating a shape that tapers in one direction. Designed primarily as an accent stone, the trapezoid's angular geometry allows it to sit flush alongside square and rectangular centre diamonds, creating seamless multi-stone designs with clean lines and architectural precision.
Origin & development
The trapezoid cut evolved alongside the emerald and baguette cuts as jewellers sought accent stones that could complement angular centre diamonds. Where tapered baguettes were developed for curved centres, the trapezoid was designed specifically for square and rectangular centres like princess, emerald, and radiant cuts. Its angled sides follow the natural geometry of these shapes, creating a unified, cohesive look that became a staple of high-end ring design.
How it's shaped
The trapezoid features a four-sided outline with two parallel edges (top and bottom) and two angled edges that converge toward one end. Step-cut facets run parallel to the longer edges, producing clean, linear reflections that complement rather than compete with a brilliant centre stone. The angle of the converging sides is carefully calibrated to match the specific centre stone it will accompany, ensuring a gap-free fit.
Highlights
Trapezoid diamonds are the unsung heroes of multi-stone ring design. Their angular geometry creates a smooth visual transition from a square or rectangular centre to the curved band, eliminating the awkward gaps that occur when round accent stones are paired with angular centres. The step-cut facets add depth and structure to the overall composition without drawing attention away from the main stone.
